Abruzzo is characterized by the presence of mountain ranges, among which the "Gran Sasso" that with the Monte Corno includes the Apennines' highest peak, standing at 2914m. In total, its National Parks and Reserves make up one third of the region's total area. For these reasons, the Abruzzo is called "Europe's Green Region".
The varied and abundant fauna will enchant you. You could spot an Abruzzo chamois or encounter a black bear, and even spot wolves, wild boar, lynx, porcupines, deer and golden eagles, while walking in small villages or protected parks.
The shores of the sea are covered mostly by long, sandy beaches, and in some small areas, rock formations with crystal clear water.
